The BMW TwinPower Turbo engine comes in three, four and six-cylinder versions, in both petrol and diesel options. They’re typified by exceptional power delivery and have been fine-tuned to minimise friction and reduce thermal loss, so increasing efficiency and decreasing emissions. In the BMW 1 Series, for example, the petrol-engined BMW 118i delivers 136hp with 54.3 - 58.9 mpg and CO₂ emissions of 112.0 - 122.0 g/km (with an automatic gearbox), while the diesel equivalent generates 116hp with 70.6 - 78.5 mpg. At the other end of the scale, the BMW M140i has a petrol engine that develops 340hp, yet will return up to 39.8mpg.

The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo has a range of three petrol engines (184hp, 252hp, 326hp) and four diesel engines (150hp, 190hp, 258hp, 313hp), all of which provide a dynamic drive, yet return exceptional fuel and emissions figures. Figures for the combined cycle demonstrate this: 46.3 - 48.7 mpg, CO₂ emission 132.0 - 139.0 g/km for the petrol BMW 320i Gran Turismo, 62.8 - 65.7 mpg, CO₂ emission 112.0 - 119.0 g/km for the diesel BMW 318d Gran Turismo. 

Step up to the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo models and there’s a choice between two petrol and three diesel engines, offering between 184hp and and 450hp and fuel and emissions figures that start at 49.6 - 51.4 mpg and CO₂ emissions of 144.0 - 149.0 g/km.

BMW EfficientDynamics.


A powerful, efficient engine is only part of the solution to deliver exceptional fuel efficiencies. BMW EfficientDynamics is a strategy to reduce fuel consumption while increasing driving pleasure and includes aerodynamic measures and intelligent energy management.

All BMW models are designed to slip through the air with as little resistance as possible. To do so they have a range of aerodynamic aids, ranging from the Aero Curtain at the front of the car, which speed the air past the wheels, so reducing turbulence and hence drag, to the active rear spoiler on the BMW 3 and 5 Series Gran Turismo. This deploys at speeds over 68mph, and as well as adding to the high speed stability of the car, it also reduces drag. 

The intelligent energy measures are less noticeable, until you drive a BMW. For example, brake energy regeneration uses the kinetic energy of the car when braking to charge the battery. This means the alternator needs to run less, putting less demand on the engine.

Auto Start-Stop turns off the engine when the car comes to a stop and is in neutral, or in cars with an automatic transmission, when stopped with the brake pedal pressed, so fuel is only used when the car is moving. And every BMW has a Drive Performance Control button with an ECO PRO setting that maximises the efficiency of everything from driving style to the air conditioning.  In this mode fuel savings of up to 20% are possible (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study).
