BMW Open Work:
World Premiere at Frieze Art Fair 2017.

Frieze Art Fair 2017 saw the World Premiere of BMW Open Work. The new initiative will invite a different artist each year to create an experience inspired by our iconic design style, engineering and technology that can stretch across multiple mediums.

The project was first developed to mirror the fair’s open and free feeling taking inspiration from Umberto Eco’s literary essay “Opera Aperta” (1962), which suggests art is completed in co-operation with the audience.

Olivia Erlanger was the debut artist chosen for the project, with Attilia Fattori Franchini the curator.

BMW Open Work offers artists the opportunity to engage with audiences in new and unexpected ways. The possibility of launching BMW Open Work with such a talented artist as Olivia Erlanger, whose project will observe the effect of technology on humans and nature, is absolutely thrilling.

OLIVIA ERLANGER.

BMW Open Work artist 2017.

Olivia Erlanger, a New York based artist earned selection for the 2017 BMW Open Work initiative after developing an excellent reputation for her sculptures.

For the commission, Erlanger was inspired by current and future BMW technology and created an immersive space which flowed through the fair. The installation, named “Body Electric”, drew the audience in with a mix of interactive audio, unusual lighting and unique sculptures that aimed to drive conversation on the changing relationship between people and technology.

As humans begin a mutative synthesis with our machines, ‘Body Electric’ considers the changing relationship that we have to the environment, as our embodied experience of the ‘natural’ becomes increasingly mediated and distorted by objects of our own design.

Frieze Art Fair 2016:
The BMW Individual 7 Series by Esther Mahlangu.

Last year, BMW Individual and Esther Mahlangu collaborated to create a unique BMW 7 Series, 25 years after she created a BMW Art Car which was the first to be signed by a woman.

Through painting her characteristic and ornamental motifs on the real wood interior trims, the luxury saloon was transformed into a dynamic and unique work of art. Mahlangu's unique graphic design style is comprised of the bold colours inspired by her cultural background as a member of the Ndebele people.

The one-of-a-kind vehicle was then offered for silent auction and a charitable donation made to The Art Room, a UK charity jointly chosen by Frieze and BMW.
