The BMW X4

One nudge of the accelerator pedal and the BMW X4 enters a world of its own. The intelligent four-wheel drive system, BMW xDrive, transfers power to the street with outstanding traction, while the eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission uses the potential of the engines to the full: the BMW X4 xDrive35d completes the 0 to 62mph sprint in just 5.2 seconds.

BMW X4 Variable Sport Steering

Variable Sport Steering.

The Variable Sport Steering with Servotronic brings an effortless agility to steering. It reacts to the angle of the steering wheel with various steering ratios to reduce the steering movement required. This increases the car’s agility and improves handling in sharp turns and along narrow roads. It also makes low speed manoeuvring easier, while at motorway speeds the system provides excellent directional stability and a very high degree of steering precision.

BMW X4 Dynamics

With its specially constructed chassis, high-performance engines and an array of top-quality standard equipment, the BMW X4 offers impressive agility.

When turning, the outer wheels have to travel further than the inner wheels, so Performance Control gives the outer wheels more power and the inner wheels less, maximising traction on each wheel for increased safety and comfort.

The eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission adapts to suit your driving styles, whether you’re comfortably cruising or driving more dynamically. Prefer the hands-on approach? Use the shortened gear selector lever or gearshift paddles on the steering wheel to change ratios.

This is also where the newly developed, highly effective converter clutch comes into play. The eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission delivers maximum efficiency and incredibly smooth gear shifts. In Sport mode, the gear shifts are configured for maximum performance. The fine graduation of the eight gears optimises acceleration, keeping the engine at maximum power and efficiency.

Launch Control enables the fastest possible acceleration, shifting automatically to make use of the engine’s optimum power delivery.

At motorway speeds, the additional eighth gear reduces the required engine speed, so reducing fuel consumption and engine noise.

The chassis is specially tuned to suit the BMW X4, giving you exceptional road-holding and top-class agility while guaranteeing comfort. The wide track of the BMW X4 and its five-arm rear axle also enable high-speed cornering with minimum roll.

Dynamic Damper Control.

The Dynamic Damper Control makes it possible to adjust the damper characteristics to suit any given driving situation, improving comfort and driving dynamics.

In addition to the standard Comfort setting, which minimises bumps and other unpleasant vehicle movements, there are two other programmes available: the Sport and Sport+ modes. In these modes, the dampers are automatically tightened to allow for a sportier driving style.

BMW X4 xDrive

BMW xDrive.

xDrive is BMW’s intelligent four-wheel drive system and it adapts perfectly to the most challenging road surface conditions, for the best traction and driving experience at all times.

The system also recognises the first signs of oversteering and understeering. Within a tenth of a second it distributes almost 100% of the engine torque to the front or rear axle, allowing precise handling and optimum cornering. In this way, xDrive combines the advantages of four-wheel drive – traction, directional stability and safety – with classic BMW agility.

xDrive Status provides the driver with a clear picture of the terrain to help them successfully overcome challenging driving situations. In addition to an easily readable compass for orientation (only in conjunction with Navigation System), the longitude and transverse slope of the vehicle is shown, along with the current steering lock angle. These are not only shown numerically, but also with a graphic 3D display of the car itself.

BMW X4 Drive Performance Control

Drive Performance Control.

Drive Performance Control allows you to shift between  Comfort mode, for standard engine and transmission settings, the ECO PRO mode, geared towards efficiency, and the Sport mode, which enables more dynamic driving.

BMW EfficientDynamics in the BMW X4.

Restraint is not an attribute usually associated with the BMW X4 – with one notable exception: fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies and an aerodynamic design guarantee low values without any compromise in performance and dynamics.

The BMW X4 Aerodynamics

The less air resistance your car has, the less fuel needed to drive it forward. And with the entire vehicle design being testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy, the BMW X4 is exceptionally aerodynamic.

The flat undercarriage cover with engine compartment and rear axle shield are just some of the elements that contribute to the package. Further innovations in aerodynamics include the defined rear spoiler lip and the aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors.

The BMW X4 Lightweight construction

Intelligent Lightweight Construction.

The BMW X4 is built using a wide range of high-tech materials including lightweight aluminium in the front of the car and the chassis, high-strength steel in the body as well as ultra-modern plastics and magnesium. All of which reduce weight and the amount of fuel required to drive the car forward.  It also improves the dynamic driving characteristics thanks to an even, well-balanced weight distribution between front and rear axles.

Everything in ECO PRO mode is geared towards greater efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by up to 20%. This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation for even greater driving efficiency.

Active Cruise Control maintains a speed determined by the driver, as well as the distance to the car ahead. In slow-moving traffic or traffic jams, the vehicle takes over accelerating and braking, and the selected distance to the car ahead is maintained. If a vehicle ahead brakes heavily, the BMW responds immediately when the Approach Warning is activated.

areas, speed limits and motorway exits, and offers tips to the driver in advance about when to stop accelerating.

Depending on the traffic situation, the driver's behaviour and road conditions, ECO PRO Route displays the most efficient route to take, with the on-board computer showing the percentage of fuel that can be saved by taking the ECO PRO Route.

BMW X4 EfficientDynamics technologies

Energy management.

The BMW X4 has a number of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, including the Gear Shift Indicator, Auto Start-Stop, Electric Power Steering and Brake Energy Regeneration. The interplay between these technologies ensures the sustainable mobility of tomorrow − today.

Optimum, perfectly-timed gear changes can help save fuel, particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. The engine’s electronics system identifies the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed, indicating when it’s best to change gear.

The system also recognises when you are accelerating fast and so will delay its recommendation until the engine speed is at optimum point. Comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around 4% less fuel.

Auto Start-Stop ensures you only use fuel when the car is moving. Waiting at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, Auto Start-Stop saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car comes to a stop (Steptonic transmissions) or when the car is placed in ‘neutral’ (manual transmissions). You can easily switch this feature on and off with a click of a button.

Auto Start-Stop never compromises safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its ideal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated/cooled, if the battery level is too low or if the steering wheel is being turned.

If the car starts to roll forward or if the windscreen becomes foggy, the engine re-starts automatically.

The BMW X4 has electrical steering for an incredible drive, allowing you to manoeuvre the car around the tightest corners and over the toughest terrain with ease.

Unlike conventional power steering, it doesn't use a hydraulic system, but an intelligent solution based on an electric motor. The benefit being that the motor only operates when steering support is actually required, making it more efficient.

The BMW X4 Brake Energy Regeneration technology harnesses the kinetic energy produced by slowing or braking and turns it into electricity. Used to charge the car’s battery, the intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently, consequently reducing strain on the generator.

The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – typical of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.
