The Dynamic Damper Control makes it possible to adjust the damper characteristics to suit any given driving situation. In addition to the standard Comfort setting, which minimises bumps and unpleasant vehicle movements, there are two other programmes available: the Sport and Sport+ modes. In these modes, the dampers are automatically tightened to allow for a sportier driving style.

xDrive is BMW’s intelligent four-wheel drive system and it adapts perfectly to the most challenging road surface conditions, for the best traction and driving experience at all times.

The system also recognises the first signs of oversteering and understeering. Within a tenth of a second it distributes almost 100% of the engine torque to the front or rear axle,  allowing precise handling and optimum cornering. In this way, xDrive combines the advantages of four-wheel drive – traction, directional stability and safety – with classic BMW agility.

xDrive Status provides the driver with a clear picture of the terrain to help them successfully overcome challenging driving situations. In addition to an easily readable compass for orientation (only in conjunction with Navigation System), the longitude and transverse slope of the vehicle is shown, along with the current steering lock angle. These are not only shown numerically, but also with a graphic 3D display of the car itself.

BMW Performance Control distributes engine and braking control to the individual wheels when turning. When turning, the outer wheels have to move a longer distance than the inner wheels, so BMW Performance Control give the outer wheels more power, maximising traction on each of the wheels.

Variable Sport Steering with Servotronic reduces the amount of physical effort required from the driver when driving in an agile style. It reacts to the angle of the steering wheel independently of the speed, changing the steering ratios to  reduce the amount of steering required, particularly large angles. The result is significantly increased agility and improved handling in sharp turns, along narrow roads, or when parking.

We believe a car should be able to adapt to every driver. Our Drive Performance Control puts you in total control. Choose between Comfort mode, ECO PRO mode, or Sport mode and fine tune your car, precisely to your driving requirements.

The ECO PRO mode reduces fuel consumption by up to 20%. The Route-Ahead Assist and ECO PRO Route (only available with Professional Navigation System) further help to conserve fuel, using the navigation system to assess local road conditions and give tips in advance.

ECO PRO Route also helps to ensure efficient use of fuel by suggesting an efficiency-optimised route that takes into account the volume of traffic, individual driving style and local conditions.

Thus reducing the amount of energy needed to drive the car forward.

The BMW X3 has standard technologies on board that coordinate energy use, and it’s one of the many reasons behind its high level of efficiency. It’s how all these technologies interact that enables the vehicle to achieve its impressive figures for fuel consumption and emissions.

Optimum, perfectly-timed gear changes can help save fuel, particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. The engine’s electronics system identifies the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed, indicating when it’s best to change gear. The system also recognises when you are accelerating and will delay its recommendation accordingly. Comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around 4% less fuel.

Auto Start-Stop ensures you’re only using fuel when the car is moving. Waiting at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, Auto Start-Stop saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car comes to a stop,  provided it’s in neutral (manual transmission) or has come to a complete stop (Steptronic transmission). You can easily switch this feature on and off with thea click of a button.

A signal in the Info Display indicates that Auto Stop-Start is active. As soon as the clutch is pressed (manual transmission) or the foot taken from the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine re-starts automatically.

Auto Start-Stop never compromises driving comfort and safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its ideal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated/cooled, the battery level is too low or the steering wheel is being turned. And if the car starts to roll the engine re-starts automatically.

Every time you turn the wheel, energy is consumed. But energy shouldn’t be consumed when the wheel is not being turned. BMW Electric Power Steering is only active when needed, unlike conventional hydraulic steering systems. When the steering wheel is static – for example, when driving straight ahead along a motorway at high speed – the electric motor is inactive.

The BMW X3’s Brake Energy Regeneration technology harnesses the kinetic energy produced by slowing or braking and turns it into electricity. Used to charge the car’s battery, the intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently, so reducing strain on the generator.

The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – typical of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

BMW X3 Aerodynamics



The less air resistance your car has, the less fuel it needs to drive forward. And with the entire vehicle design being testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy, the BMW X3 is exceptionally aerodynamic.

The flat undercarriage cover with engine compartment and rear axle shield are just some of the elements that contribute. Further innovations in aerodynamics include the defined rear spoiler lip and the aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors.

The 17-inch Streamline style 306 light alloy wheels, combined with reduced rolling resistance 245/55 R 17 tyres, help conserve fuel and lower CO2 emissions.



Everything in ECO PRO mode is geared towards greater efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by up to 20%.

This mode optimises accelerator and transmission responses as well as transmission shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation for greater driving efficiency.

In combination with the Active Cruise Control, the vehicle accelerates more efficiently after braking when in ECO PRO mode.

Based on data from the navigation system, the Route-Ahead Assist recognises curves, built-up areas, speed limits and motorway exits, and suggests when to stop accelerating.

Depending on the traffic situation, the driver's behaviour and road conditions, ECO PRO Route displays the most efficient route to take, with the on-board computer showing the percentage of fuel that can be saved by taking the ECO PRO Route.

BMW X3 Eight-speed Steptronic Transmission

The eight-speed Steptronic transmission sets a new benchmark in dynamic performance and efficiency and is a key element of BMW EfficientDynamics. The finely-tuned gradation of the gears allows optimum power delivery at both low and high speeds.

Critically, this reduces fuel consumption significantly, while allowing the driver to enjoy increased sportiness and dynamic performance. At high speeds in particular, the additional gears reduce engine speed, in turn decreasing fuel consumption and engine noise.
