When the BMW M4 Convertible accelerates to the limit in next to no time, its power can be experienced by all the senses. The boost stays finely adjustable even in the highest rev ranges and thanks to numerous motorsport technologies such as the Active M Differential or M Servotronic, the BMW M4 Convertible reacts in every situation exactly as you’d expect of a top-class athlete: with high precision and absolute perfection.

Competition Package.


The Competition Package for the BMW M4 Convertible supplies an added edge, using equipment and technology you’d expect to be solely reserved for the racetrack.

This is delivered via enhanced engine output and features such as the Adaptive M suspension, newly adapted Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), the Active M Differential and 20-inch M light alloy wheels with mixed tyres. The modifications to the suspension include new springs, dampers and stabilisers as well as adapted Comfort, Sport and Sport+ driving modes.

Under the bonnet, the power of the M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder petrol engine is boosted to 331 kW/450 hp and its sound is made more distinct by the sports exhaust.

Design plays a key part in making the competition package unique. One of its most impressive features are the exclusive forged and gloss-lathed 20-inch M light alloy wheels in Star-spoke 666 M design with mixed tyres. The package is further emphasised by the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, which extends from the front kidney grille to the model designation in high-gloss black, culminating powerfully in the black chrome tailpipes.

Active M Differential.


The Active M Differential distributes the torque between the two rear wheels to optimise traction and driving stability during dynamic lane changing, accelerating out of bends or when grip is variable such as on snow, gravel and ice. It even provides precise handling during extreme lateral acceleration. The constant, smooth adjustment of the differential lock harmonises the vehicle's driving performance, improving control in extreme situations.

The system, which was developed for motorsports, is connected to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and provides up to 100% locking, neutralising even the finest differences in torque between the rear wheels. The Active M Differential provides optimal grip as well as great directional stability and perfect handling, and it converts virtually all of the engine's power into acceleration.

Launch Control.


Launch Control enables maximum acceleration from a standing start. Just deactivate Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), choose the sequential mode with driving program 3, firmly hold down the brake and press the accelerator pedal to kickstart.

After the starting-flag symbol in the instrument cluster display is illuminated, the engine will be set to its ideal starting speed. While maintaining kickdown, release the brake and the vehicle will then accelerate at its maximum until the accelerator is released. The M dual-clutch transmission constantly sets the gearshift points so that when shifting up, the next optimal engine speed is available.

INTELLIGENT LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION.

By ingeniously reducing the weight of individual BMW components, the M Series delivers exceptional driving dynamics and exemplary efficiency. Ultra-light materials like magnesium, aluminium and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic are used in many components, which allows for greater agility, acceleration and braking.

Adaptive M Suspension.


Reacting in milliseconds, the Adaptive M suspension's electronically controlled shock absorbers constantly adjust to road conditions and driving style. This guarantees optimal road contact, the best possible traction and even more agile handling. The suspension settings can be adjusted from comfortable to sporty-dynamic via the Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes.

Comfort mode ensures comfortable handling during everyday driving, and also increases safety in the event of sudden swerving. In Sport mode, ample comfort is maintained, but dampening is reduced and contact with the road is more direct, ideal for country roads and uneven racetracks. Sport+ mode offers minimal dampening and maximum driving dynamics on level roads and racetracks.

Brakes.


A key feature of the BMW M4 Convertible driving experience is the braking system. With their unrivalled precision, the M Carbon Ceramic Brake System and the M compound brakes noticeably enhance the car’s performance.

Taken directly from motor-sport, the M Carbon Ceramic Brake System uses an innovative carbon-fibre ceramic compound to provide more direct braking power and improve brake-fade stabilisation. The compound is also corrosion-free, tolerates more heat, features strongly reduced abrasion and contributes to lower vehicle weight.


With its enlarged brake dimensions and increased number of pistons, the M Carbon Ceramic Brake System's heat resistance in continuous operation means it’s fit for the racetrack. And even when it’s raining, the perforated, ventilated brake disc rings guarantee optimal responsiveness.

The technology behind M compound brakes comes from the world of motorsport, allowing them to maintain constant effectiveness and brake-fade stabilisation, even in heavy use. Made from various highly resilient materials, they’ve excellent thermal stability and long-term durability. They’re also weight optimised, which has a positive effect on agility, dynamics, acceleration and fuel consumption.

The perforated, ventilated brake discs have four piston fixed callipers at the front and two piston fixed callipers at the rear, for optimal responsiveness in wet conditions and improved heat dissipation. The metallic blue metallic callipers with the characteristic M logo strongly emphasise the brake discs' sporty appearance and distinctive M design.

M SERVOTRONIC.

M Servotronic constantly adjusts the car’s power steering and ensures a direct and precise steering response, even at high speeds. It also delivers supreme comfort by minimising the physical effort required for steering, as well as maximising agility when parking, maneuvering or navigating narrow or twisting road

Seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic.

 

The seven-speed M double-clutch transmission system with Drivelogic has been specially designed for the BMW M high-revving engine.

The system boasts a traction optimised automatic gear selection, Launch Control, Low Speed Assistance, as well as Auto Start-Stop, making it possible to change gears extremely quickly without any loss in power. Two sub-transmissions, each with its own clutch, continuously relay the power of the engine to the rear wheels.

The system can be controlled automatically or manually using the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel or gear lever. Drivelogic can be automatically (D mode) or manually (S mode) controlled, and in each mode three shifting options are available: extremely sporty, comfortable or efficient.

Aerodynamics.


The carefully engineered interplay of M vehicles’ aerodynamic elements means the car remains stable and under total control even at high speeds. From the front, the striking apron visually embodies the M vehicles' aerodynamics concept, with large air inlets ensuring perfect cooling of all vital engine components.

Further aerodynamic elements can be found in the two vertical inlets in the Aero Curtain and the M side gills with integrated Air Breather behind the wheel arches. These create an accelerated flow of air around the front wheels, minimising turbulence and reducing air resistance.

At the back, the gurney flap - a spoiler on the rear edge of the boot - further optimises the aerodynamic balance between the front and rear axle, cutting down on lift.

As a whole, the precise coordination of these elements creates a perfect aerodynamic balance, making the BMW M4 Convertible is ready for the racetrack, and for the open road.

Brake Energy Regeneration.


Brake Energy Regeneration technology harnesses kinetic energy produced by slowing or braking and turns it into electricity. Used to charge the car’s battery, it means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently, consequently reducing strain on it.

The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – typical of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

Optimum Shift Indicator.


Optimum, perfectly-timed gear changes can save enormous amounts of fuel - particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. With BMW’s Optimum Shift Indicator, the engine’s electronics system identifies the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed.

When it would be more efficient to shift into a higher or lower gear, an arrow lights up in the Info Display. The system also recognses when the car is accelerating quickly and will delay its recommendation accordingly. BMW internal comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around 4% less fuel.

BMW Auto Start-Stop

Auto Start-Stop.


Auto Start-Stop switches the engine off when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill, such as at traffic lights or in a traffic jam, to further reduce overall fuel consumption. When the driver presses down on the clutch (manual transmission) or takes their foot off the brake (M DCT Drivelogic), the engine automatically starts again in a fraction of a second.

A signal in the Info Display indicates that Auto Stop-Start is active. As soon as the clutch is pressed (manual transmission) or the foot taken from the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine re-starts automatically.

Auto Start-Stop never compromises driving comfort and safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its ideal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated/cooled, the battery level is too low or the steering wheel is being turned. And if the car starts to roll the engine re-starts automatically.
