The driving dynamics of the BMW M3 Saloon.


With the choice of two incredible transmissions; a 6-speed manual transmission or an interruption-free 7-speed M double-clutch transmission, the 431hp M TwinPower Turbo straight six-cylinder petrol engine guarantees a powerful, dynamic drive.

The driving experience is even further enhanced by the new Active M Differential that provides optimal grip at all times, and the M Servotronic that ensures finely-adjusted steering.

Competition Package.


The Competition Package for the BMW M3 Saloon supplies an added edge, using equipment and technology you’d expect to be solely reserved for the racetrack to transfer extra performance to the road.

This is delivered courtesy of enhanced engine output and features such as the specially tuned Adaptive M suspension, newly adapted Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), the Active M Differential and 20-inch M light alloy wheels with mixed tyres. Suspension modifications include new springs, dampers and stabilisers, as well as adapted Comfort, Sport and Sport+ driving modes.

Under the bonnet, the power of the M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder petrol engine is boosted to 331 kW/450 hp, and its sound made more powerful by the sports exhaust.

Design plays a key part in making the competition package unique. One of its most impressive features is the exclusive forged and gloss-lathed 20-inch M light alloy wheels in Star-spoke 666 M design with mixed tyres. BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line extends from the front kidney grille to the model designation in high-gloss black, culminating powerfully in the black chrome tailpipes.

Launch Control.


Launch Control, included in the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission,  enables maximum acceleration from a standing start. Simply press the DSC button, slide the gear lever into ‘S’, set the brakes and activate the kick-down function with the accelerator – then release the brakes and find out what torque really means.

INTELLIGENT LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION.

By ingeniously reducing the weight of individual BMW components, the M Series delivers exceptional driving dynamics and exemplary efficiency. Ultra-light materials like magnesium, aluminium carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic are used in many components. The lighter the car, the greater its agility, acceleration and braking.

Adaptive M Suspension.


Reacting in milliseconds, the Adaptive M suspension's electronically controlled shock absorbers constantly adjust to road conditions and driving style. This guarantees optimal road contact, the best possible traction and exceptionally agile handling. The suspension settings can be adjusted from comfortable to sporty-dynamic via the Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes.

Comfort mode ensures comfortable handling during everyday driving, and also increases safety in the event of sudden swerving. In Sport mode, ample comfort is maintained, but dampening is reduced and contact with the road is more direct – ideal for country roads and uneven race tracks. Sport+ mode offers minimal dampening and maximum driving dynamics on level roads and racetracks.

Brakes.


A key feature of the BMW M3 Saloon driving experience is its braking system. With their unbeatable precision, the M Carbon Ceramic Brake System or the M compound brakes ensure unrivalled stopping performance.

The M Carbon Ceramic Brake System is a technology taken directly from motorsport. Made from an innovative carbon-fibre ceramic compound, braking power is direct and with brake-fade stabilised. It is also corrosion-free, tolerates more heat, features strongly reduced abrasion and contributes to lower vehicle weight.

Lightweight construction reduces rotating and unsprung mass, improving acceleration, responsiveness and overall handling, but also increasing driving dynamics, traction and suspension comfort, and reducing fuel consumption.

With its enlarged brake dimensions and increased number of pistons, the M Carbon Ceramic Brake System's heat resistance under continuous load means it’s race track ready.

The perforated, ventilated brake discs guarantee optimal responsiveness in wet conditions, as well as ideal heat dissipation. The six-piston fixed-callipers in the front and the four-piston fixed-callipers in the rear are instantly recognisable thanks to their gold metallic finish and characteristic M logo.

M Compound Brakes use a technology that’s regularly seen on the racetrack, and they maintain their effectiveness and brake-fade stabilisation – even when pushed to their limit. The use of highly resilient materials results in excellent thermal stability, a long lifespan and precise control. It also reduces the brakes' weight for increased agility, dynamics and acceleration.

The perforated, ventilated brake discs and brake callipers with four pistons in the front and two in the rear guarantee optimal responsiveness in wet conditions, as well as improved heat dissipation. Their blue metallic finish with the M logo strongly emphasise the brake discs' sporty appearance and distinct, authentic M design.

M SERVOTRONIC.

M Servotronic constantly adjusts the car’s power steering and ensures a direct and precise steering response even at high speeds. It also delivers supreme comfort by minimising the physical effort required for steering, as well as maximising agility when parking, maneuvering or navigating narrow or twisting roads.

Seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic.

 

The Seven-speed M double-clutch transmission system with Drivelogic has been specially designed for the BMW M high-revving engine.

The system boasts a traction-optimised automatic gear selection, Launch Control, Low Speed Assist and Auto Start-stop.

The system can be controlled automatically or manually using the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, or the gear stick, making it possible to change gears at high speed without using the clutch and without any interruption in the power delivery. 

Aerodynamics.


The carefully engineered interplay of M vehicles’ aerodynamic elements means the car remains stable and under total control even at high speeds. From the front, the striking apron visually embodies the M vehicles' aerodynamics concept, with large air inlets ensuring perfect cooling of vital engine components.

Further aerodynamic elements can be found in the two vertical inlets in the Aero Curtain and the M side gills with integrated Air Breather behind the wheel arches. These create an accelerated flow of air around the front wheels, while at the same time minimising turbulence and reducing air resistance.

From the back, the gurney flap - a spoiler on the rear edge of the boot - further optimises the aerodynamic balance between the front and rear axle, cutting down on lift.

As a whole, the precise coordination of these elements creates a perfect aerodynamic balance, making the M3 Saloon ready for the racetrack or the open road.

Brake Energy Regeneration.


The Brake Energy Regeneration technology used in the BMW M3 harnesses the kinetic energy produced when slowing or braking and turns it into electricity. Then used to charge the car’s battery, it means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently, consequently reducing strain on it.

The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – typical of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

Optimum Shift Indicator.


Optimum, perfectly-timed gear changes can save enormous amounts of fuel - particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. With the Optimum Shift Indicator, the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed, is identified by the car. When it would be more efficient to shift into a higher or lower gear, an arrow lights up in the Info Display.

The system also recognises quick acceleration and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed is optimal. BMW internal comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around 4% less fuel

Auto Start-Stop.


Auto Start-Stop switches the engine off when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill, such as at traffic lights or in a traffic jam, to further reduce overall fuel consumption. When the driver presses down on the clutch (manual transmission) or takes their foot off the brake (M DCT Drivelogic), the engine automatically starts again in a fraction of a second.

A signal in the Info Display indicates that Auto Stop-Start is active. As soon as the clutch is pressed (manual transmission) or your foot taken off the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine re-starts automatically.

Auto Start-Stop never compromises driving comfort and safety, as it remains inactive if the engine is not at its ideal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated/cooled, the battery level is too low or the steering wheel is being turned. And if the car starts to roll the engine re-starts automatically.
