INTELLIGENT. DYNAMIC.
ELECTRIC.

BMW eDrive.

BMW eDrive, the electrical drive component of BMW iPerformance models, not only delivers maximum driving pleasure, but does so almost silently and without emissions. Three parts form the core of eDrive: the electric motor, the lithium-ion high performance battery and intelligent energy management.

BMW eDrive is also the key component in BMW i models, the future of sustainable motoring. Click the link below to discover more about the BMW i range.

FORWARD LOOKING MOBILITY.

The three components of BMW eDrive work together to provide a dynamic drive across the BMW iPerformance range. Whether you choose the 225xe Active Tourer, 330e Saloon, X5 xDrive40e, 740e or 740Le xDrive, underneath you will find BMW eDrive technology.

The electric motor is a key part of BMW eDrive. With a fully charged battery, the 225xe Active Tourer and 330e Saloon have a purely electric range of up to 25 miles. This means that the average commute can easily be completed using only the electric motor, without any local emissions.

However, BMW eDrive is not just about efficiency. Depending on the situation, the electric motor can assist the petrol engine in providing short bursts of acceleration - the eBoost function - for a more dynamic driving experience.

All vehicles with BMW eDrive technology rely on a high-tech lithium-ion battery. It's partnered with a cooling system that keeps it at its optimum operating temperature, increasing its output and service life. Recharging is possible wherever electricity is available; from a conventional 230-volt household socket to dedicated electric car charge points.

The high-tech battery and electric motor that power all iPerformance models require intelligent energy management to deliver optimum efficiency and performance. So a predictive operating strategy is used to maximise the car's electric range. Navigation data entered by the driver is used to calculate the optimum time to use the electric motor or charge the battery, depending on the route and traffic situation. This can give an energy saving of up to 10%, allowing the driver to cover a greater distance on battery power.

In addition, Brake Energy Regeneration ensures that kinetic energy released when braking or slowing down is saved in the battery to increase its overall performance.

iPERFORMANCE QUESTIONS, ANSWERED.

A crucial factor in making the decision is the availability of facilities for charging the vehicle at home. Quite simply from a domestic socket, with your own BMW i Wallbox or at another location in your neighbourhood.

Furthermore, the benefit from the operating costs (electricity vs fuel price) of an iPerformance model can be especially exploited if a large number of journeys can be made in electric mode. If you have charging facilities at your workplace, you could gain even more from this advantage.

BMW iPerformance models are designed to very high technical standards, based on the same vehicle architecture as the conventional models. The safety of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles with high-voltage batteries has also been confirmed by independent institutes.

Thanks to the electric motor in the BMW iPerformance models, electric driving and an increase in efficiency are combined. The electric motor delivers its power immediately, even from standstill, making for a dynamic driving experience. And as part of the boost function, this electric motor gives support for the combustion engine during acceleration and in dynamic short bursts. Moreover, BMW iPerformance models are silent and locally emission-free when travelling in electric mode.

Yes, it is. If the total range with electric motor and combustion engine is 50 miles, the driver will be warned by a message in the instrument cluster. Below a total range of 31 miles, the driver receives a range warning permanently. If the fuel tank is empty, the remaining electric range can be used to drive to the nearest filling station – provided enough energy is present and the system conditions permit electric driving.

A specific cyclic range is indicated for every BMW iPerformance model. The electric range actually achieved depends on many factors. Important influences are the air-conditioning and heating demand, the general load on the on-board power system (e.g. navigation, radio, seat and windscreen heating, climatic conditions in summer and winter) as well as individual driving style.

When the high-voltage battery is discharged, purely electric driving is no longer possible, but it is still possible to continue driving perfectly as normal thanks to the combustion engine. An intelligent energy management system means no damage can occur to the high-voltage battery at any time even it is displayed as completely “empty”.

The high voltage batteries used in BMW iPerformance models are lithium-ion batteries which, in contrast to conventional nickel, lead or cadmium batteries, have been optimised for use in motor vehicles. Within the scope of the BMW Battery Certificate, your BMW Centre guarantees to rectify any defect in the high-voltage battery for the first 60,000 miles or up to a maximum of five years after delivery of the new vehicle (the first criterion fulfilled applies). You can find out about details of the service entitlements of the BMW Battery Certificate from your BMW Centre.

The BMW iPerformance models only have slight restrictions in the volume of luggage space compared with conventional BMW models. With regard to loading comfort, intelligent solutions have been developed which firstly ensure a flat loading platform and secondly provide the necessary depth for transporting bulky objects. Furthermore, all through-loading systems (e.g. the 40:20:40 split of the backrest) are also available for the BMW iPerformance models.

Parking for a lengthy period of time (e.g. for several weeks) is of course possible, but the charge level of the high-voltage battery may decrease if the vehicle is not moved for a substantial period.

It is therefore advisable to park the vehicle with an almost fully charged battery or to connect the vehicle with a suitable charging station during lengthy stationary phases as this will then automatically recharge the high-voltage battery if necessary.

Please also take note of the advice relating to lengthy stationary phases in the operating instructions provided with the vehicle.
