With its combination of BMW iPerformance and a BMW TwinPower Turbo engine, the BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer offers both an electric driving experience and unlimited mobility. The intelligent interplay between both drive systems gives rise to the electrical xDrive. This system is regulated automatically and offers the best-possible traction and agility in every situation – with optimised consumption and CO2 emissions of up to 141.2mpg and 49 to 46 g/km respectively.

Versatility meets cost-effectiveness meets driving pleasure: The BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer combines tried-and-tested flexibility and outstanding fuel consumption with typical BMW driving dynamics. Thanks to BMW eDrive technology from BMW EfficientDynamics, a range of up to 25 miles in the purely electric mode is possible – without any local emissions and without using a drop of fuel.

A space-saving design is used to accommodate the eDrive propulsion components – without any compromises in comfort, functionality or spaciousness. On the outside, the vehicle differs from the conventionally-powered model thanks to an LED light ring on the charging port as well as the “eDrive” lettering at the c-pillars, which indicates the vehicle’s innovative drive technology. In the interior, the “eDrive” lettering can be found on the door sills, the driving modes switch, the gear stick and in the instrument cluster, where it remains visible for the entire journey

Individual driving characteristics.


As a BMW iPerformance model, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer has various different drive modes that allow the driver to significantly influence the actual consumption. This depends on both the driving mode selected and the driver’s personal behaviour. When the battery is fully charged, you can drive for up to 25 miles without using a single drop of fuel. In the AUTO eDrive mode, the optimal combination of electric motor and combustion engine enables the focus to be placed on top-quality efficiency.

The strengths of the BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer really come to the fore when driving in the city. Short distances (up to 25 miles) can be covered on purely electric power, and operation in the hybrid mode results in a combined fuel consumption of 134.5 - 141.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 46 to 49 g/km.
Commuters benefit from the BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer's incredibly efficient plug-in hybrid concept. On a journey of around 30 to 37 miles, this car has a combined fuel consumption of around 62 mpg, which is considerably less than the appetite of similar vehicles in this class.
On long journeys, combustion engine alone powers the vehicle whenever the speed exceeds 78mph. When the driver is travelling at a low speed but requires maximum power to overtake, the electric motor is fed energy from the high-voltage battery and this then intervenes in a supportive role, delivering an extra surge of acceleration thanks to its high torque. When the driver brakes or releases the accelerator, the electric motor acts as a generator, using kinetic energy to deliver electricity for the high-voltage battery. This power can be called upon for subsequent overtaking manoeuvres. A combined fuel consumption of around 40mpg means that the vehicle has a range of approximately 343 miles on long journeys.

ELECTRICAL xDRIVE.

All-wheel drive for full traction – only available in the BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer, the electrical xDrive of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) distributes the propulsive force of the motors to both axles so as to optimise traction. This helps to counteract oversteer as well as understeer and ensures an optimum drive configuration.

ACCELERATION WITH eBOOST.

For maximum drive output, the electric motor supports the combustion engine as eBoost. When the acceleration demand is high, energy from the high-voltage battery is used to generate additional thrust and offer an especially dynamic acceleration experience.

OPTIMAL HANDLING.

In certain driving situations, such as when entering a bend, the BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer varies the ratio of drive torque on front and rear wheels in favour of a rear-biased setting. This increases the precision during steering and permits an even more dynamic driving experience.

BEST TRACTION.

Due to the electric motor on the rear axle and petrol engine on the front axle, the dynamic benefits of both drives and an all-wheel drive vehicle can be ideally united by the electrical xDrive. This increases traction and safety on wet or icy roads.

Drivetrain.


The new BMW TwinPower Turbo 3-cylinder petrol engine features agile power delivery, excellent responsiveness even at low engine speeds, an awe-inspiring sound and tremendous efficiency. Deployed in conjunction with an electric motor, it reveals itself as a surprisingly powerful drive unit. The vehicle's drive primarily consists of a combustion engine that powers the front wheels, along with an electric motor on the rear axle. Both of these can power the vehicle either individually or together.

Intelligent energy management.


Intelligent energy management is one of the main pillars of the BMW eDrive concept. This system coordinates the interaction of all BMW drive components with the electric motor in order to combine the best possible efficiency with great driving dynamics, and to increase the electric range.

The eDrive button allows the driver to choose between three different electric drive modes: AUTO eDrive (standard), MAX eDrive or SAVE BATTERY.

In the AUTO eDrive mode, the intelligent BMW EfficientDynamics system determines the most efficient combination of electric motor and combustion engine – depending on the driving speed and the battery charging status. This mode is divided into two phases: If the battery charging status is between 100% and 7% you can drive at up to 50mph – free of local emissions and without using any fuel. At higher speeds or with more demanding requirements, the petrol engine switches on automatically. If the battery charge level falls below approx. 7%, the BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer can be driven in purely electric mode with moderate acceleration at up to 12.5mph and with gentle acceleration or a constant speed at 34mph.

Electric driving fun to the max: In the MAX eDrive mode, you can enjoy purely electric driving at speeds of up to 78mph. At higher speeds or when the acceleration potential has been exhausted, the combustion engine switches on automatically.

When the battery charging status is low, the SAVE BATTERY mode enables the battery to be charged by the combustion engine or allows the charging status to be maintained at 50%. In this way, the driver can save the battery capacity for purely electric driving later.

Once the destination has been entered into the navigation system, predictive energy management analyses the planned route and can also use constant data such as the speed limit and real-time information on the current traffic situation - Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) is included as standard . The system then uses the purely electric driving mode efficiently and according to the situation and above all for sections of the route on which it is most worthwhile: in urban traffic for example.

The Driving Experience Control lets the driver choose between Comfort mode, for standard engine and transmission settings, ECO PRO mode, geared towards efficiency, and Sport mode, which enables even more dynamic driving. ECO PRO mode adjusts the characteristics of the accelerator pedal and transmission as well as the heating/air conditioning settings to optimise fuel consumption.

ECO PRO mode reduces fuel consumption by up to 20%. Further fuel savings potential is possible with ECO PRO Route, which suggests an efficiency-optimised route that takes into account the volume of traffic, as well as individual driving styles and local conditions in order to suggest a route that optimises efficiency and thereby reduces fuel consumption.

Comfort mode guarantees an extremely comfortable driving experience by suitably adjusting the settings of the suspension components. In Sport mode, all drive and suspension settings are adjusted for more dynamic driving. The engine is more spontaneously responsive, the gears of the automatic transmission are shifted at higher speeds, the shifting points for the manual transmission are shown later, and on the whole the vehicle reacts much more directly and dynamically.

Drive Performance Control is available for both BMW 2 Series Active Tourer models with a conventional drive system and the BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer.

CHARGING.


Whether at a conventional household power socket or using the BMW i Wallbox from the comprehensive range of 360° ELECTRIC products and services – charging the high-voltage battery couldn’t be easier. You can top up while you’re out and about at one of the many ChargeNow public charging stations.

All-round service for e-mobility.

The vehicle can be easily charged at home by connecting it to a power socket via the supplied standard charging cable and is once again ready to roll with a full battery after approximately two to four hours. Charging is even quicker and more convenient when done with the separately available BMW i Wallbox: This wall-mounted charging station for home use increases charging capacity and reduces the charging time, making it the ideal design accessory for BMW vehicles. The installation service reacts flexibly to individual requirements. In addition to increasing the charging capacity even more, the BMW i Wallbox Connect is fully Wi-Fi enabled and also supports intelligent integration into the home network and smart-home functions, along with energy management systems.

In addition to charging the vehicle at home, it is now possible – thanks to the development of the ChargeNow mobility service by BMW – to charge BMW electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles at public locations. Numerous providers of public charging stations have also merged, forming a large network.

All the ChargeNow charging stations can be easily located in the navigation system with the help of BMW ConnectedDrive, the BMW Remote app or the ChargeNow website. The car's charging port is located behind a flap on the front left side panel, where an LED light ring on the charging port provides information regarding the vehicle's charging status, even from the outside.

The ChargeNow card and intercharge app allow drivers to access and use the charging stations without the need for cash. An overview of all charging procedures can be accessed via the customer portal at chargenow.com. ChargeNow also provides customers with a comprehensive overview of all costs incurred. Customers are presented with a consolidated bill at the end of the month, to be paid by credit card.

Connectivity.


Always connected to your BMW: Via smartphone (iOS or Android), not only BMW Remote Services such as remote locking are available, but also hybrid-specific functions. This ensures that you always have an overview of the consumption and efficiency values of your BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer. BMW Services for every situation, which can be used inside the vehicle – and outside.

The BMW ConnectedDrive App for iOS and Android displays detailed information regarding the current status of the BMW – such as the vehicle's location, the battery level and remaining range.

The charging procedure can be controlled remotely via the week-to-view timer, and the vehicle's temperature remotely adjusted in good time ready for the next journey. Destinations, points of interest and the location of charging stations can be easily sent from the application directly to the vehicle.

The BMW ConnectedDrive App also measures the efficiency of every trip and gives helpful tips, such as how to drive the vehicle in a more efficient manner and extend its range.

Get into a comfortably cool car in summer and a warm car with clear windows in winter – the stationary heating and cooling in the BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer makes it possible. Thanks to an electrical refrigerant compressor and a tankless electrical heater, the automatic air conditioning functions almost silently, even when the engine is off. Two different departure times can be scheduled in advance.

Half an hour before the planned departure, heating, cooling and ventilation to the selected temperature is implemented by an intelligent control system. The system is operated by the iDrive Controller inside the car, or conveniently with a compatible smartphone using the BMW Remote Services app.

Provided that the high-voltage battery has a sufficient charge, the stationary heating and cooling functions regardless of whether the vehicle is being externally charged or not.

Interior & functionality.

 

The BMW 225xe iPerformance Active Tourer is economical with its fuel consumption − and more than generous when it comes to space. Thanks to the elevated seating position, rear-seat passengers enjoy an outstanding view. The high-voltage battery is stored compactly under the rear seat bench, meaning that there’s always enough room for your transport needs. The standard 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat further enhances the practical qualities of the vehicle. This increases the flexibility of the luggage compartment and also facilitates the transportation of bulky objects.
Fuel consumption is determined in accordance with the ECE driving cycle, made up of approximately one-third urban traffic and two-thirds extra-urban driving (based on the distance covered). CO2 emissions are measured in addition to fuel consumption.
